The Recipe January 29 2016

The recipe for a great science fiction story may seem complex, utilizing complicated measuring calculations and perfectly seasoned ingredients from vast unknown worlds. It’s not complex at all. A great science fiction story’s recipe is extremely simple.
At the heart of this simple recipe, almost like the key starting ingredient of a half cup of milk, is realism. Great science fiction, no matter how far fetched, no matter how out-of-this-world, begins with a realistic, believable premise. Take “Dune” by Frank Herbert for example. The core of that amazing science fiction novel is great families feuding to control distant planet lands and the struggles of their heir apparent. All the great novels and stories, from historic fiction to crime novels to sci-fi are based on a similar theme or derivation of one at their core. Who hasn’t heard the story of when H.G. Wells’ “War Of The Worlds” was read over the radio and listeners panicked and called the police for fear the earth was really being invaded by Martians.
Next is the equivalent to the whisking of two eggs or the second key ingredient, a glimpse into a future. Wonderful science fiction takes the reader to a different realm of reality and time. A make believe future world that’s believable, no matter how outlandish or peculiar. How enjoyable to be transported through words to a future time where amazing gadgets have astounding functions, where meeting a creature who is no where near human is the norm, and mind-blowing adventures can be seen through the perspective of an alien.
Let’s add another into our delicious recipe mix of sci-fi, and that’s what I call the human factor. In a galaxy far, far away, there once was this man who had real human challenges, and those challenges needed to be overcome. Let’s set this character with human challenges we all can relate to into a strange and bizarre land where science and technology rule. No matter how complex the character’s challenges he must face, great science fiction peppers those challenges to what we, the reader, may have to endure in our everyday lives. Granted the hurdles maybe accentuated and embellished, but it all comes down to what we’ve all experienced as humans to a certain level. Who hasn’t been stuck in traffic or on a train that’s stopped dead in it’s tracks, trapped beyond our control. Yet people are working to get us to our destination and helping to get us back home. Whether it be emergency services clearing a wreck or railroad crews fixing a switch, they are helping us get out of our current situation and to point B. Stripped to it’s core, and completely unembellished, doesn’t that sound like “The Martian” by Andy Weir? Think about it.
Finally, the giant, ostentatious bowl in which all these ingredients are mixed together, is the story. That wonderful tale where flying transports carry us through air that’s not breathable and genius robots with human-like features titillate us with just a hint of truth as to how to get back to earth as we know it. That great, classic story in the magnificent genre, or piping hot oven, that is Science Fiction.
